Illinois’ senior U.S. senator is lauding as revolutionary a White House initiative under which he says Chicago and Detroit will boost innovation in manufacturing and create jobs.
President Barack Obama is to announce the initiative Tuesday.
The institutes are being seeded by $70 million each from the Department of Defense, plus more than $70 million each from non-government sources.
My opinion: Manufacturing most certainly remains one of the hardest hit areas of the economy following the Great Recession. I am very much in favor of fiscal stimulus targeting this area of the economy and hopefully more will make its way south *cough* Birmingham *cough*.
In my monthly analysis of the economic situation in the Birmingham area, I noted that manufacturing is our weakest sector presently. It would be great if Sessions and Shelby made a little more noise to bring some of that manufacturing grant money to our lovely state! Particularly, if we could get some type of expanding grant program that follows hand-in-hand with the Future Land Use program Birmingham recently adopted.
